Phrases and Terms
When it comes to web design the amount of jargon there is to get your head around is immense. In this section we will look at some of these phrases and terms you will come across, and explain what there meanings are.
- Accessibility - How easy a web site is to use for people with a disability. For example someone who is visually impaired, or colour blind. Or someone who has hearing difficulties. A website needs to have good accessibility.
- Backlink - A backlink is a link coming from a website to your website. It is usually important for you to have a good number, or quality backlinks as this more than likely help you get a higher ranking on a search engine. Backlinking is important if you are working on SEO(search engine optimization) on your website. We will look at SEO later in this section.
- Breadcrumb - This is a part of the navigation that shows you where about you are on a web page. Breadcrumbs are usually found near the top of a web page and will define your current location within the site.
- CSS (cascading style sheets) - CSS is a language for the web to define the look and feel of a web site i.e, layouts, colours, fonts.
- Embedded Style - A CSS style that is written in the head of a XTML document.
- Impression - Each time an advertisement loads up on a web page. This is an impression.
- Permalink - Permalink is short for permanent link. This is a link the a reader can use to bookmark a current blog post. Without a permalink the blog post would be hard to find at a later date.
